Install kubectl

Amazon EKS clusters will need kubectl and kubelet and aws-cli or aws-iam-authenticator tools to enable IAM authentication for Your Kubernetes cluster.

  1. We use the following command to install kubectl.
sudo curl --silent --location -o /usr/local/bin/kubectl \
   https://amazon-eks.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/1.21.2/2021-07-05/bin/linux/amd64/kubectl

sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/kubectl

  1. Update awscli
curl "https://awscli.amazonaws.com/awscli-exe-linux-x86_64.zip" -o "awscliv2.zip"
unzip awscliv2.zip
sudo ./aws/install

  1. Install jq, envsubst (from GNU gettext utilities) and bash-completion
sudo yum -y install jq gettext bash-completion moreutils

jq is like sed for JSON data - you can use it to slice and filter and map and transform structured data with the same ease as sed, awk, grep.

  1. We perform authentication.

  1. Enable kubectl bash_completion
kubectl completion bash >> ~/.bash_completion
